Nearly four years after their break-up, the four members of Phish may have some unfinished business together. In an interview with Rolling Stone last week, Trey Anastasio didn’t exactly say the band has talked about a reunion, but he did drop some heavy hints. “When Phish broke up, I made some comment about how I’m not gonna go around playing ‘You Enjoy Myself’ for the rest of my life,” Anastasio said with a laugh. “And it’s so funny because Fish and Mike and Page have been talking to each other a lot lately and now — it’s not that I can’t believe that I said that, but its symbolic of how much I lost my mind or how much I lost my bearings or something. Because at this point in time I would give my left nut to play that song five times in a row every day until I die. I certainly thought about that while I was in jail.”

Anastasio spoke to RS on May 21st, the same day he received some good news: He was sentenced to probation on charges of possessing painkillers without a prescription, which had been reduced to a misdemeanor after he completed a drug treatment program. Earlier in May, Anastasio and the other members of Phish stood onstage together in New York to accept a lifetime achievement award at the Jammies

i will definitely catch some phish shows if they tour again. yea, they kind of left a sour taste in my mouth after the 1st and 2nd breaks, but whatever. i dont care, phish = great memories growing up.

it would be so much fun to see them again. the scene i could do without, but the actual shows would be awesome even if they sucked. knowing every word and every note to every song makes for a great concert experience. add the whole goofy, playful entity that is the phish and you have yourself some super enjoyable summer nights.

post hiatus phish was pretty bad. we can only hope that trey remembers how to play the guitar like he did 10-15 years ago if they come back again.

carla326
05/28/08 10:31AM ET
post hiatus phish was pretty sickies.

and I'm not sure how much of a scene there will be. Many people have dropped off, found something else, or "had a bad taste left in their mouth".

And many of the hardcore that are actually excited about going, are in a completely different place in life now..and are older, etc. I think the entire "scene" could be way different than what we remember, but at the same time, that ENERGY... is gonna be the same. When the lights go down... I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it.

Funny how such a small quote can make me so happy, but I don't care :p

I'd love for phish to be tiny when they come back. It seems like more people hate on phish these days, or are over them, then the # of people who would still go.

And for all the young kids who haven't had a chance to ever see phish, I think its great for them, that'd they would be able to see them. I'd have to think that the # of young kids discovering phish these days, is much smaller than when we were young and tape trading was abundant and there was constant new material going around.

and I'm not sure how much of a scene there will be. Many people have dropped off, found something else, or "had a bad taste left in their mouth".

And many of the hardcore that are actually excited about going, are in a completely different place in life now..and are older, etc. I think the entire "scene" could be way different than what we remember...

hey carla. exciting news! but i've got to say that i think you could be off base in yr assessment of phish's popularity. many of those people who "found something else" did it out of necessity and are going to be right there if/when phish comes back. the jamband drug dealers/users/losers will always be there. the wooks will be there. the vendors will be there. plus, there are now tons of high school and college kids who have never seen phish. those kids have been listening to the shows and are dying to see the band. the only people who won't be there are the people in their late 20s - early 30s who have truly moved on: family, kids, responsibilities. i'm sure there are lots of those people, but there are just as many 19-year-olds with no summer job ready to take their place.

i would bet that the scene will be pretty similar to how it was post hiatus. good and bad.

personally, if they do come back, i still feel like they (trey) "owe" us for coventry. i'm sorry, i know some people find ways to defend coventry, but trey took a shit on phish and the fans as far as i'm concerned.

"I did not know one person who had seen a decent amount of pre-hiatus shows shut out of any post hiatus show they wanted to catch"

i didn't get tickets to NYE 02 or the jan hampton shows. of course, i didn't try all that hard, and there was no way i was going to pay the kind of money people were paying just to see them at their first shows back. i'm sure the "energy" at MSG was bonkers, but the music was only so-so, and hampton was worse. i find "energy" lots of places. other than those shows, i didn't get shut out of a post-hiatus show (or a pre-hiatus show for that matter).

My best friend got 4 10th row seats to MSG from his aunt(a bigwig at NBC)...I was living in the Florida Keys at the time and decided not to bother coming up(made our 5th friend VERY happy)...everyone I knew went to Hampton...in hindsight, I think I was better off in sunny south FLA!

hey fruno :o)

My "assessment" is just a guess. I guess there will be youngins to take the touring place as was before. But I really think kids these days, aren't into bands like phish. I don't know if the torch has been passed on, per se.

And sure, the bad element will be there. Hopefully not though. I've found a way thru the years to tune out stuff that doesn't resonate w/ me. All I care about is dancing room :o)

GAWD I hope its true. And I don't feel like I'm "owed" anything. I don't feel entitled to anything. Trey was in the midst of a raging addiction during Coventry. And although that doesn't make it "right" it explains a lot of things. Addiction can make people say/do things that aren't who they really are.

Anyways... if phish does come back, this girl is going to be so fuckin happy. Bc phish has always been to me, WAY more than just music. And that unexplainable thing is timeless, imo.

and I2edI3aron, gorge 98 is a h3tty first show! Summer 98 was a truly a perfect time in my life and I've been listening to different highlights all am.

by the way isn't this a biscuit forum. we should be supporting the band that is there for us every season instead of this mega-monster stadium playing money hungry band called phish. The only reason they are getting back together is to feed treys ego! Is every one going to turn their backs on biscuits like Phish did to us? Camp Bisco is better than Coventry and It put together. I wont say better than Clifford ball but that was when they wanted to have fun. Does any one remeber the one encore at coventry. "He is out of money"

Phish grossed over 200 mil during their career. Enough to have a million dollar charity that they still donate album proceeds to. bisco still plays the electric factory 13 years into their career and even they can afford to take time off. Phish was playing 2 day festivals to 80K people in the swamp. You do the math.

This has nothing to do with money, and everything to do with finally having a clear head and realizing he left something on the table. You shoudl all be excited though, once they come back, bisco will be back to plying bars again.

I've been seeing Phish since 1992. there were peaks and valleys, of course. but post-hiatus Phish should be a moot point in this regard. the whole band was fucked up, really fucked up...especially the front-man.

if they're all clean and sober, and focused on returning, serious about practicing and putting together incredible setlists...if they decide to take their band seriously again -- there is NO OTHER BAND that will be able to come close to the brilliance that they'll create playing live music again.

If Phish comes back, they will DEFINITELY be well-practiced. People act like the band doesn't know that they came back rusty and disappointed a large portion of their fans -- of fucking course they know, and Trey was a junkie and now that he is clean I'm sure they are all smart enough to realize that bringing back Phish again, something so special to so many people, is not an easy task and will require their extreme dedication. They share a relationship with their fans that most bands never will and I know that they do not want to come back and "shit" on their fans again. I feel like most of you who talk shit on Trey for his addiction don't truly comprehend what a drug addiction does to you. It makes you a completely different person -- a person who doesn't care about their family, fans, self, or anything but the drug itself. Sure, most of us use drugs here but a lot of you have been fortunate enough to not have addiction tear your family apart or lose someone to it. I am so glad that Trey seems to have kicked his habit, although I do have trouble seeing him remaining sober over more years of intense touring. Any time he reaches for a substance Mike just needs to slap him across the face, and then hand him a Gordon-rolled jay.

That said, post hiatus Phish still topped most other touring acts of the time. SCI was dying, WSP sucks, STS9 was still interesting (but not for very much longer), and Biscuits were about to lose Sammy (still playing some great shows though obviously).

post hiatus is a strange animal... although I don't like most of the year, I thought they were at least headed in the right direction in 2003, but they got seriously derailed the following yr... what came out of their intial decision to stop though was that june'04 run, which I thought was easily their best stretch of music during those couple of yrs.

well, supposedly trey was "sober" summer 03, meditating, doing yoga after shows, etc. Then who knows what happened. Dave Matthews tour? Kidding, but not. (That Dave and Trey goes to Africa thing was uh...disturbing...)

And then the vegas shows in 04 when Trey was CLEARLY a mess, announces the "end", then had 2nd thoughts all throughout those June shows. Which were KILLER. Then August, uh... weird 'goodbye' tour all together.

i hope they get back together i am not expecting it to be the best musically but it will get me to go to a large venue a couple times a year rather then some of these smaller shitty ones. I will go hope to hear them play a few songs well and take it for what it is. I also fell tickets wont be as hard to get due to the econonmy now. Gas prices will make it hard to make it to show to show no matter how much grill cheese the wooks are pushing.

"everyone is entitled to their opinion and if you saw phish from 93-00 like i did i believe they already peaked. of course post hiatus had moments, but i also have a great "moment" each morning taking a poop...i need more then a few "moments.""

so would you say your pooping career peaked in the mid or late 90s?

no shit they already peaked. thats what happens to ALL great bands. they all start out ultra creative, passionate and driven, often leading to some extraordinary moments as well as some disasters. once they go through that process of improving and tweaking every little detail with constant practice, a beautiful thing happens. a peak. a period of utter perfection, ala 95 for phish. after that, its typical for the once youthful band members to slack off a little, try new things musically, or even finally get consumed by the scene.

97 and 98 were both REALLY solid years for phish. it wasnt the same sound they had perfected leading up to 95(the general sound theme of that period all sounds very similar, the "phish sound"), but a new style, the porno funk era, and it KICKED ASS, just in a different way. all the funk energy and the stop/starts were awesome. but like all organic things the machine eventually fizzled down a little. the end of 99 into the hiatus might have had some rough patches, but they were always a great band to see.

the post hiatus stuff came along and at least for me it was just about having fun again. i never expected them(esp trey) to come back and play flawlessly executed, blow out awesome shows like they used to, just to hear some fucking phish songs live again. it really wasnt as bad as it gets made out to be. 2-28-03 was one of the best phish shows i saw live pre or post hiatus.

so if your logic is that you dont want to see a band unless they are peaking, youre being kind of narrow minded. if you are merely looking for that fleeting period of excellence and nothing else, youre going to miss out on some other really fun moments. they may be more few and far between but hey, this aint the old days. you really wouldnt want to see the phish hit the stage again? im not saying i would go on tour or anything, but to see those lights go down in my hometown venue(hampton) again would make my fucking day for sure!

"the porno funk era, and it KICKED ASS, just in a different way. all the funk energy and the stop/starts were awesome"

i know i'm in the minority among phans, but i always thought the funk was too repetitive and simplistic for phish. lots of shitty bands can play funk, because it's easy as hell. but hey, it gets the white kids dancing. i'm not saying i disliked 97-98 at all - those years are way better than 99-00, IMO. and 97-98 saw some of the best phish shows ever, e.g. great went. in 97 the funk was good, but it got old for me pretty quickly. by the end of 98, i was kind of over the funk.

Interesting thread. I see only one person truly nailed what made Phish great: practice. Back in the day they rehearsed 40 hours a week and more. They took it very seriously. As that died down, the music did, too. They weren't as tight, they couldn't create the awesome jams, and some songs they couldn't even play correctly any more.

Most people wouldn't notice this, of course. People are just happy to listen to music and get stoned and hang out with a bunch of people. The ones who rip on post hiatus, and even post 98, are the ones who can actually tell the difference. For instance, I think it was called the Hey Game, or filling the hey hole. Something like that. It was an exercise that they used in practice that they would sometimes incorporate into their jams. The point was to have no one touching anyone else with their notes. When they were at their best they could do this and do it really fast...check out 10.24.95 Antelope for the fastest example I can think of. 8.13.93 Gin has it, as well. It was a fairly common thing to find in their jams, but you have to listen so fast that it is easy to miss.

Anyway, I don't see why anyone is surprised. It has been obvious they would come back since they left. As long as no one died, they were going to come back, ALL bands do this. It's just a matter of being patient. The fact that they sucked so so hard before they left makes the waiting easy.

Also, when they do come back it will be good for the Biscuits and for all the other jam bands. Why is this? Because when you bring people into a scene it creates interest in anything else in that scene. The fact that they have been gone is a very possibly a reason for the Biscuits stagnation when it comes to drawing in new fans as we all feel they should.

Finally, the biscuits surpassed Phish in 1999 and have never looked back. No matter what Phish do, the only way they will be able to even match what the Biscuits are doing is to integrate the same style of setlist into their shows. 2001 > Mike's is boring as shit. It's just two songs (one that really really sucked every single time it was played after the "funk" period) that are played with no break in between. A segue between two songs, with the Biscuits it doesn't even matter which two (for the most part), is so much more exciting. When the crowd slowly picks up on the song that is coming next, and they slowly build to it and finally blast in...you just can't beat that.

I am not meaning to disparage Phish. Phish are perhaps the most talented grouping of rock musicians ever. In 94-95, especially, their shows had an energy that no other band ever has. The created the most awesome jams, the biggest peaks, it was truly special. They have never been as fun as bisco at it's best.

All my opinion, of course.

Seriously, is there anyone in this forum that would really choose to see Phish over Bisco?

Shit...I sold a NYE 02 Phish ticket and made enough to get my flight and tickets for NYE Bisco. I've never second guessed that, either. It was the right decision. I got caught up in "The Return" and hovered on TM for a few hours and scored 1 ticket. I saw the first Gangster live and got to relish in the techno I-Man that followed. I have seen that sort of pandemonium at a Phish show, but it was in 1998...I never saw anything close again. With the biscuits I know I will see it again, and many times.

Also, Big Cypress was a huge shitball, too. It gets waaaaay too much respect for a total NON crowd pleaser of a show. A show where pretty much every single hardcore Phish fan in existence attended. The sort of show where they could have basically layed it all out on a platter and no one would have been bitter because we were all there. Fuck, they didnt' even play Fluffhead. I had a blast, but golly that was two nights of Phish jacking off.

Dammit, now I'm getting pissed off. I am happy that Phish will be coming back, but happier still that I will see many more bisco shows over the next few years.

Maybe the fact that I live in CA and mainly hear the shows after the fact has kept me from getting jaded, but wtf? Seriously...

Years of mediocrity? Multiple runs? Shit, man...I really dunno if I should just ignore you due to idiocy. There is stuff that doesn't match up to their best, but I can't think of any year, post 98, that doesn't have at least a handful of awesome shit. I think perhaps my favorite things about bisco is that every single show has something worthwhile. Perhaps their music just resonates with me in a different way than you but I am going to just say I completely disagree with you.

You haven't even seen them in 5 years. How am I more of an idiot than you are for basically saying what you said about Phish about the Disco Biscuits? Like they are some entity that's completely above criticism. IMO, Biscuits are FAR more hit and miss than Phish ever was.

Fishman also never said he was leaving and then proceeded to play uninspired slop for over two years

I saw them last summer, actually.

And yeah, Trey did leave and had already started playing uninspired slop and then came back and did it even worse.

Even during the Sammy on the way out shows, there is still a ton of great stuff. And NYE 07 may not be of the caliber of other runs, but there are still good moments.

I added my more recent shows. 12.7.06 was pretty good, I would say. As for the every 4 years thing, I think that is a bit unfair. They came out consistently until 2003, then skipped 2 years due to band instability. I fully expect to see them at least a few times later this years.

Phish will always rule. Trey made you feel so much. Biscuits make me dance harder than i've ever danced at any show but Phish had so much soul and just a different type of talent. You get the chills in the middle of Shimmy like you do in the middle of Hood but Trey's voice and Phish's singing can't be beat. I love the Bisco party but have recently been really missing Phish.
