Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings Album Notes
Personnel: John Coltrane (soprano & tenor saxophones); Eric Dolphy (alto saxophone, bass clarinet); Garvin Bushell (oboe, contrabassoon); Ahmed Abdul-Malik (oud); McCoy Tyner (piano); Reggie Workman, Jimmy Garrison (bass); Elvin Jones, Roy Haynes (drums).

Producer: Bob Thiele.

Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna.

Recorded live at The Village Vanguard, New York, New York on November 1, 2, 3 & 5, 1961. Includes liner notes by David A. Wild.

Digitally remastered using 20-bit Super Mapping by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios).

When John Coltrane brought an extended version of his newly-built quartet into New York's Village Vanguard for a week's stay in November of 1961, he and his soon-to-be-longtime producer Bob Thiele already knew that they were about to record Trane's first live dates as a bandleader. After his heavy, big-band Impulse! debut AFRICA BRASS!, Trane's music was streaming further and further into uncharted musical spaces, and recording him was about to become Thiele's raison d'etre. Hence we have nearly four hours of this incomparable music that features, among many other wonders, the controlled swingin' fury of Elvin Jones, the rhythm-defying astral flights of Eric Dolphy's alto sax and bass clarinet, and, of course, crystallization of the leader's other-worldly sonic masterplan. The final statement in acoustic jazz that was John Coltrane's Impulse! Career begins here at the Vanguard. Yes, much of this music has been released piece-meal through the years. But taking in this entire recording (in single or multiple sittings) is an experience onto itself. It is a watershed that well deserves the praise it gets.

Eric Dolphy
Conversations

In 1963 (probably July, though some sources place the dates in May or June), Eric Dolphy recorded some sessions in New York with producer Alan Douglas, the fruits of which were issued on small labels as the LPs Conversations and Iron Man. They've been reissued a number of times on various labels, occasionally compiled together, but never with quite the treatment they deserve (which is perhaps why they're not as celebrated as they should be). In whatever form, though, it's classic, essential Dolphy that stands as some of his finest work past Out to Lunch. Conversations is the more eclectic of the two, featuring radical re-imaginings of three standards, plus the jubilant, Caribbean-flavored "Music Matador" (by ensemble members Prince Lasha on flute and Sonny Simmons on alto). That cut, and a classic inside/outside reworking of Fats Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz" feature Dolphy leading ensembles of up-and-coming "new thing" players, which prominently feature vibist Bobby Hutcherson and trumpeter Woody Shaw. The second half of the album takes a far more minimalist approach, with Dolphy performing unaccompanied (extremely rare prior to Anthony Braxton's For Alto) on "Love Me." "Alone Together" is an over-13-minute duet between Dolphy and bassist Richard Davis, featuring some astoundingly telepathic exchanges that more than justify its length. Even if the selections don't completely hang together as an LP statement, they're united by Dolphy's generally brilliant playing and a sense that -- after several years without entering the studio much as a leader -- Dolphy was really striving to push his (and others') music forward. The results are richly rewarding, making Conversations one of the landmarks in his catalog. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Ok folks .. here i come:

KEN McINTYRE & ERIC DOLPHY-LOOKING AHEAD

http://www.mediafire.com/?9akri1tm1zt

It was quite fitting that Ken McIntyre had an opportunity to record in a quintet with Eric Dolphy, for his multi-instrumental approach was similar to Dolphy's, although he always had a very different sound. On this CD reissue, McIntyre plays alto on four tunes and flute on two others (his work on bassoon, oboe and bass clarinet would come slightly later), while Dolphy mostly plays alto but doubles on flute on one number and switches to bass clarinet for "Dianna." With pianist Walter Bishop, Jr., bassist Sam Jones and drummer Art Taylor offering concise solos and swinging support, McIntyre somehow almost holds his own with Dolphy on a variety of originals and George Gershwin's "They All Laughed." A very interesting date.

1. Half Note Triplets
2. Ode To Charlie Parker
3. Iron Man
4. Densities
5. Night Music
6. Abstraction
7. Donna Lee

This is a really nice collection of live material, mainly from two dates at Carnegie Hall in 1963. The first three numbers feature Dolphy with his quartet, performing more or less straightforwardly on more or less straightforward material; the three after that feature Dolphy in some more unusual settings, performing Gunther Schuller compositions; the last is an all-star deal with Lalo Schifrin, Jimmy Knepper, and Jim Hall, among others.

12. (Untitled Blues)
13. My Heart Stood Still
14. I Want To Be Happy
15. Drum Conversation
16. I've Got You Under My Skin

This is a great record, but it's also a discographical nightmare. The Powell/Mingus/Roach tracks are from the famous Massey Hall date, at which those three plus Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie put on one of the great concerts of all time, followed by a scintillating trios date from the rhythm section. The other stuff is really good, it's just oddball stuff with nothing in common with the Massey Hall material. Anyway, it's a lot of Powell and Mingus.

TRACKS: Embraceable You, Sure Thing, Cherokee, Jubilee, Lullaby of Birdland, Bass- ically Speaking, Drum Conversation, I've Got You Under My Skin.
PERSONNEL: Bud Powell: Piano; Charles Mingus: Bass; Max Roach: Drums. Recorded at Massey Hall, May 15, 1953.

TRACKS: My Devotion, Polka Dots and Moonbeams, My Heart Stood Still, I Want to Be Happy

Someone mentioned Tim Berne earlier in thread .. here is something real quick .. :

John Zorn - Spy Vs. Spy: The Music Of Ornette Coleman

http://www.mediafire.com/?3odhmymtbwe

John Zorn teams up with fellow altoist Tim Berne, bassist Mark Dresser and both Joey Baron and Michael Vatcher on drums to perform 17 Ornette Coleman tunes which range chronologically from 1958's "Disguise" to four selections from 1987's In All Languages. The performances are concise with all but four songs being under three minutes and seven under two, but the interpretations are unremittingly violent.

The Heavyweight Champion: The Complete Atlantic Recordings of John Coltrane
VBR 192 kbps
7 CDs: 678 MB

Here

The Heavyweight Champion is a box set that lives up to its title. Collecting all of John Coltrane's Atlantic recordings, including a fair number of unreleased takes as well as an entire disc of alternate tracks and studio chatter, the seven-disc box set documents a pivotal moment in Coltrane's career, as he was moving from hard bop and sweet standards to a more daring, experimental style of playing influenced by the avant-garde. Much of the music is hard bop (Giant Steps) or lushly melodic (My Favorite Things), but the latter discs show the saxophonist coming to terms with the more experimental movements in jazz as he performs with musicians like Ornette Coleman. The scope of this music is, quite simply, breathtaking -- not only was Coltrane developing at a rapid speed, but the resulting music encompasses nearly every element that made him a brilliant musician, and it is beautiful.

Max Roach

Percussion Bitter Sweet

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4NFS3UNP

This CD reissue brings back a classic album, one of the finest of drummer Max Roach's very productive career. The illustrious sidemen (trumpeter Booker Little; trombonist Julian Priester; Eric Dolphy on alto, bass clarinet, and flute; tenorman Clifford Jordan; pianist Mal Waldron; and bassist Art Davis, in addition to some guest percussionists) all have opportunities to make strong contributions and Dolphy's pleading alto solo on "Mendacity" is particularly memorable. Abbey Lincoln has two emotional and very effective vocals, but it is the overall sound of the ensembles and the political nature of the music that make this set (along with Roach's Freedom Now Suite) quite unique in jazz history.

Duke Ellington (piano);
Charles Mingus (bass);
Max Roach (drums)

Recorded at Sound Makers, New York, New York,September 17, 1962.

Although this excellent album is listed as a Duke Ellington, equal billing should be given to the participation of Charles Mingus and Max Roach. The remastered CD is outstanding, having been cleaned up from the original master tape. The CD also has the addition of six extra tracks, including four unheard Ellington originals: "Very Special," "Rem Blues," "Switch Blade," and "Backward Country Boy Blues." He is as at home in the setting of a trio as he is with a wailing big-band, and as usual, he allows the other musicians to play. The trio version of "Caravan" is exceptional, raucous and swinging.

7. One Mo' (6:53)

Bobby Timmons (piano);
Blue Mitchell (trumpet);
Sam Jones (bass);
Art Blakey (drums)

Recorded in August 1960.

Pianist Bobby Timmons, best known for his sanctified and funky playing and composing, is mostly heard in a straightahead vein on this CD reissue of a Riverside session. Timmons's four originals ("So Tired" is most memorable) alternate with three standards and are interpreted by a quartet with trumpeter Blue Mitchell, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Art Blakey. The swinging music is well-played, making this a good example of Bobby Timmons playing in a boppish (as opposed to funky) setting.

In the 20 months between Jimmy Smith's first Blue Note session and this live appearance at the great Harlem club Small's Paradise, he'd become a nationwide hit and launched a whole new sound in jazz, playing the electric organ. He'd made 15 albums in a variety of contexts, but this live session captured how he reached people night after night with his working trio. Nine selections here had made up two volumes of "Groovin' At Small's Paradise". Making its first appearance on CD, the session has been restored to the original order in which the band played the music that night with four previously unissued tunes added. Rudy Van Gelder returned to the original tapes he made in a corner of the club that night to achieve the best possible sound for this valuable document.

Recorded live at Small's Paradise, New York, New York on November 15, 1957.

JOHN COLTRANE - DEAR OLD STOCKHOLM

1. Dear Old Stockholm
2. After The Rain
3. One Down, One Up
4. After The Crescent
5. Dear Lord

John Coltrane (tenor saxophone);
McCoy Tyner (piano);
Jimmy Garrison (bass);
Roy Haynes (drums)

Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on April 29, 1963 and May 26, 1965.

DEAR OLD STOCKHOLM gathers together studio sessions the Coltrane Quartet made with the great drummer Roy Haynes who was filling in for the remarkable Elvin Jones. "I always tried to get him when Elvin Jones wasn't able to make it," Coltrane explained. The resulting studio sessions, now gathered together on one disc for the first time, paint an intriguing sonic alternative to the great Coltrane Quartet of the '60s.Where Elvin Jones' is all rolling thunder and elemental energy, Haynes' polyrhythmic style is more stacatto and jagged. What both drummers had in common was an uncanny intuition for orchestrating Coltrane's epic melodic inventions, and setting up a freewheeling rhythmic counterpoint to his most complex passages. "One Down, One Up" and "After The Crescent" are among the most expansive, lyrical group improvisations in the entire Coltrane canon, as Haynes shadows each tenor motif with complex variations that inspire Coltrane to dig down deeper. And yet it is the work of the quartet as a whole on the poignant ballad "After The Rain" that lingers in the listener's imagination long after the disc has stopped. And for long time fans of the Impulse! recordings, the exceptional quality of GRP's recent digital remasterings reveal details hidden in the grooves for many years.

LEE MORGAN - CITY LIGHTS

1. City Lights
2. Tempo De Waltz
3. You're Mine You
4. Just By Myself
5. Kin Folks

Lee Morgan - trumpet ;
Curtis Fuller - trombone ;
George Coleman - alto & tenor sax
Paul Chamber - bass
Ray Bryant - piano
Art Taylor - drums

Lee Morgan was only a tender 19 years of age when he led this 1957 Blue Note date, but his technique surpassed most of the more seasoned trumpeters on the scene. Technically agile and possessed of a bright, clear tone (he clearly belongs to the lineage of Dizzy Gillespie), Morgan shines on CITY LIGHTS, and his sidemen--including saxophonist George Coleman, trombonist Curtis Fuller, and bassist Paul Chambers--are no slouches, either. Strong writing from jazz composer Benny Golson makes this a thoroughly enjoyable hard-bop session. The 2006 reissue boasts beautifully remastered sound.

We need to keep this thread alive. Does anyone know anything about Flora Purim? I really dig this tune called "Open Your Eyes, You Can Fly." I have her original version and Gary Burton's quartet version. A friend told me that there was a version with Return To Forever doing the tune (which makes sense, considering Chick penned the tune) with Flora Purim singing and scatting her ass off in the middle. Does anyone know where I could find this version?

Soup (Bill Laswell) - Soup Live

Genre - jazz/avant-garde/experimental/ambient

Bill Laswell - Bass, samples, effects
Otomo Yoshihide - Guitar, effects
Yoshigaki Yasuhiro - Drums, electric drum, percussion, trumpet

1. Chikin
2. Corn
3. Onion
4. Eel

From Amazon:

"I am reminded when listening to this of David Torn's description of his music as "ambient with an attitude", but perhaps a notion of "angry ambient" is a bit more appropriate-- the trio performs frantic energy improvs that feel deeply rooted in the work of Brian Eno but manage to capture intensity like the most frantic of power trio improv. With the addition of a lead voice on some tracks (Naruyoshi Kikuchi on tenor sax and organ, Yuji Katsui on electric violin and Akira Sakata on alto sax), there seems to be more of an opportunity, remarkably, for the trio to interact, with Otomo joining Laswell and Toshigaki in setting up grooves and rhythms for the lead players to work on. Of particular note is "Eel", the closing track on the first disc-- Naruyoshi's tenor comes in delicately at first, playing long tones and simple melodic statements over a minimalist bassline from Laswell but there's an underlying tension that comes loose with Naruyoshi exploring the altissimo register of the horn. After several minutes of this, suddenly a fantastic groove is established by the trio, with Otomo joining in to provide a platform over which Naruyoshi digs deep. Towards the end of the piece (and not for the first or last time on the record), Otomo seems to evoke the ghost of Sonny Sharrock, pulling forth statements, themes and ideas like only Sharrock seemed to manage."

this line up also known as the BLADERUNNER PROJECT

Excellent audience recording in Paris (La Villette Jazz festival) 5 July 2000

Extract of a Dave Lombardo interview :
Question : What has been your most memorable or inspirational gig and why?
Lombardo: "In Paris at a jazz festival. I played there with John Zorn and Bill Laswell, the dub producer, and Fred Frith, the guitar player/sound effects guy. We did an improv there that brought the people to their feet — it was just amazing. We clicked so well that night that I don't think it was ever recreated again. That showed what could come out from your inside naturally — a musical experience that only happens not very often."

Territory Band - Collide (with Fred Anderson) (2007)

Collide

The five-part composition, recorded live in 2006 at Chicago’s Millennium Park, opens with a spirited swing. This kind of acknowledgment to jazz history finds Axel Doerner playing some blues-inflected trumpet over the composed parts, only to open things up to the strings of cellist Fred Longberg-Holm and guitarist David Stackenäs. Certainly the crowd felt the groove as saxophonist Fred Anderson strolled into “Part 2,” and we hear his signature tenor sound blowing huge notes. The world twists in an odd direction with Lasse Marhaugs electronic accompaniment, a sort of burning electronics akin to a G.X. Jupitter-Larsen’ deconstruction. The tradition has morphed, as suddenly the group’s swinging is challenged by the digital future. Never fear, the composed section and its beat returns. Anderson deals with the electronics and the ensemble, soloing in front and over the energy systems created.

”Part 4” is the culmination of the piece, with the band working at full strength. Vandermark’s composition is tested, expanded, and driven hard here. To his credit the music, held together by dual percussionists Paul Lytton and Paal Nilssen-Lovem, is never confused nor does it dissolve into chaos. The last part opens with the drummers calling the session to conclusion. The music churns, not unlike a Brötzmann Tentet, but the true spirit is that of Sun Ra and his love of all things ceremonial.

Put them into a zip file. On an Apple, it's as simple as highlighting the files and selecting Create Archive of # Items. I'm not sure what you use on a pc.

IrishCarBomb
03/18/08 8:36PM ET
take the tracks you want to up. Then, zip ir with winrar, or winzip..if you are using a pc.

with rinrar= right click-->ad to archive--->hit ok. Creates the zip.

then go to mediafire.com and upload that zip.

@ Gravalax: Yeah, hope we can keep it that way :-) There are a bunch of threads running on about the mods, etc. and they have been pretty active in killing a lot of M F S S threads lately. We gotta keep the thread titles clean of references to 'downloads' and the initials of the D/L sites, cuz that may draw attention. I think the live and out of print nature of a lot of the jazz here protects us from scrutiny, although technically most jazz guys are anti-trading, and even old OOP albums are back for sale on pay DL sites. Its funny, some of the rips on some of the b l o g s are from the original vinyl, not CDs! Jam on guys, thanks again, and great stuff. Be sure to occasionally buy stuff from those still doing it for a living.

Yes, buy music like Marcus Miller. You think Miles Davis gives a fuck up in heaven about people downloading his recordings? I'm sure him and Jerry and Jimi have had a few good laughs at PT expense and couldn't care less if we "steal" their music.

In fact, as many know, Jerry publically abandoned ownership of his music after it was played. I bet he turns a sharp eye towards some of the living GD family over some recent events regarding ownership of the music. But then of course, they do a fat line of heaven together and all will be merry.

Sonny-

http://www.mediafire.com/?lfndeevtvwn

"Ask the Ages is Sonny Sharrock's masterpiece, and sadly it was also the last album he would record before his premature death in 1994. It's the most challenging jazz work he recorded as a leader, and it's the clearest expression of his roots as a jazz player, drawing heavily on Coltrane's modal post-bop and concepts of freedom. To that end, Sharrock reunites with Coltrane's old cohort, Pharoah Sanders, who featured Sharrock on his wild Tauhid and Izipho Zam LPs; what's more, Coltrane Quartet drummer Elvin Jones is on hand, as is young bassist Charnett Moffett. It's far and away the best, most adventurous, and most jazz-oriented backing group Sharrock recorded with during his comeback, and the results are breathtaking. The compositions are all Sharrock originals, and all six have utterly memorable themes that often recall the sweeping lyricism of Sanders' most spiritual '60s works. For his part, Sanders responds with some of his most ferocious playing in years, and Sharrock sounds vitally energized by the tenor's screeching passion. There isn't a wasted moment on the album, but particular highlights include the fiery, majestic opener, "Promises Kept," the searching ballad "Who Does She Hope to Be?," and the awe-inspiring blast-fest "Many Mansions," where Sharrock and Sanders both reach a blistering pinnacle. Listeners coming to Sharrock from rock & roll or his Space Ghost Coast to Coast soundtrack might find that Ask the Ages isn't the nonstop skronk-fest they expected; it's his overall musicality that's on display, but there's still plenty that will scare the bejeezus out of timid jazzbos. It's a tragedy that Sharrock didn't get much of a chance to expand on this achievement, but thankfully it exists in the first place."

An oft-overlooked 70s gem from Jimmy! The album's got a smooth complicated sound -- with very long tracks that open up, stretch out, and groove in a much more sophisticated way than some of Jimmy's 60s work for Verve. The approach is almost similar to Jack McDuff's complicated Blue Note albums, especially Moon Rapping, as Jimmy's working here with Thad Jones on long tracks that have lots of time changes, rhythm shifts, and mood twists that really give them a dark dark edge. Titles include "Blap", "And I Love You So", and the extended "Portuguese Soul" suite, which is really tremendous!

10. Hikky-Burr
11. Hikky-Burr - (Mix Master Mike, bonus track)

THE ORIGINAL JAM SESSIONS 1969 is made up of funk,
funk, and more funk. An all-star band was assembled
for this project, and on "Eubie Walkin'" and "Groovy Gravy,"
the bluesy guitar work of LA session great Arthur Adams adds
just the right down-home flavor to the proceedings.
Other tracks, such as the swinging "Toe Jam," highlight
the jazz musicians on the date, namely saxophonist Tom Scott,
pianist Joe Sample, and vibraphonist Victor Feldman.
The most memorable track is "Hikky-Burr."
This tune features Cosby himself scatting humorously atop an
ad-lib vamp. Contagiously groovy, these spontaneous jams
feel more like a party than a recording session. They are
carefree, uninhibited, and at times, perfectly goofy. Who
would expect anything else from the great comedian?

This spirited set of tunes--or rather jams--documents
the original and long-forgotten recording sessions made
for the television sitcom THE BILL COSBY SHOW. Fronted
by legendary producer and arranger Quincy Jones.

Organ Grinder Swing

Jimmy Smith (organ)

Grady Tate (drums)

1. Organ Grinder's Swing
2. Oh, No, Babe
3. Blues For J
4. Greensleeves
5. I'll Close My Eyes
6. Satin Doll

Jimmy Smith's Organ Grinder's Swing is one of his best. He is the undisputed master of jazz organ. The trio plays well together on this date. Burrell and Tate are on their game. But as usual Jimmy steals the show right off the bat with the title song. In this album Jimmy was mic'd. You can actually hear his expressions and grunts in the recordings.

Regular old fashioned organ grooves from the man Jimmy Smith. Slowly becoming one of my favorite organists, Jimmy's playing is superb. Holding down bass lines with the bass pedals at his feat, you'd think there was another member on stage. You'll be seeing a lot more of Mr. Smith around A Place For Music.

It's amazing what can happen when you put two master musicians like Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery in the same room, as this classic album documents. Supported by players like drummer Grady Tate, Clark Terry, and Ray Barretto, and arranger Oliver Nelson, Jimmy & Wes go to town on "The Dynamic Duo". "James & Wes", "Night Train", and the cool spin they put on "Baby, It's Cold Outside" make this album a joy to listen again and again. The alternate take of "Road Song" at the end is the cream on the cake, and in my opinion is even better than the originally issued take.

4. Messy Bessie
5. On The Sunny Side Of The Street

Introducing Stanley Turrentine on tenor sax, whose warm, old-school playing blends perfectly with the oozing grooves of Smith's Hammond, BACK AT THE CHICKEN SHACK also features regular sidemen Kenny Burrell on guitar and beatkeeper Donald Bailey. Smith's innovative concoction of soul, jazz and blues does not disappoint: from the down- home vibe of the title track, through the infectious, loping theme of Turrentine's composition "Minor Chant, to the 32-bar blues that frames spectacular solos in "Messie Bessie."

Smith's ambidextrous magic dazzles as always, and the spotlight shines with particular brightness on Turrentine, who establishes himself as a serious talent on this session. There's also a version of "Sunny Side Of The Street," not included on the original LP. This is classic Smith with all the requisite flair and cool. It's a keeper.

Stan Getz & Bob Brookmeyer: Recorded Fall 1961.

http://www.mediafire.com/?321gaoymg2u

Although he achieved a level of stardom rare in jazz with his bossa-nova recordings, Stan Getz was far from a one-trick pony. He'd started out, like everyone of his generation and before, as a soloist in a big band - most notably in Getz's case, with Woody Herman. He then moved into playing small-group jazz, and his soft, velvety tone on the tenor saxophone, directly inspired by Lester Young, started to win him fame and admiration. Throughout his life he was identified as the archetypal "cool" jazz musician, but as this album shows he could play fast, too, without losing his signature sound.

Although he played on numerous occasions with the valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer (who composed half of the songs here), this album was the only occasion on which this particular band (which also included the great drummer Roy Haynes) got into a studio and did some recording. But in a way it's all that's needed: for a musician, Getz, who sometimes seemed to mine musical seams for all they were worth, this album stands out as a unique and sparkling jewel, and a demonstration - if any were needed - that Getz had that one elusive quality that all great jazz musicians need: the ability to swing and swing hard, at any tempo.

Personnel are:

- Stan Getz: tenor saxophone
- Bob Brookmeyer: valve trombone
- Steve Kuhn: piano
- John Neves: bass
- Roy Haynes: drums.

John Cage Meets Sun Ra - 1986

http://www.mediafire.com/?9gem3xyztg6

Sun Ra improvising on the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer. Empty Words IV performed by John Cage, voice.

Recorded live in concert: June 8, 1986 at Coney Island, N.Y.
LP released in 1987

These are unedited segments of the historic concert that was part of the "Sideshows by the Seashore" held on June 8, 1986 in Coney Island, NY. Improvisations and songs by Sun Ra and Cage's indeterminate performance vocals based on strict composition methods are contrasted and find a common meeting ground as, toward the end of the session, they play together.

8. This Guy's In Love With You

You have to hear the Bad Plus's lush, lovely instrumental approach to Tears for Fears' hit "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." It's a slowly-evolving meditation on the tune that clearly is in love with its melody and structure. It might be the finest jazz cover of an '80s song since Miles Davis cut Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" back in the day. The other covers, especially their florid take on Rush's "Tom Sawyer," may be likely to get the most attention of anything on the album. But they rely too much on irony, on people's previous perceptions of the music, and do not seem quite as enamored of the original. They're jokes that are funny the first time but not so much the second or third. As with the Bad Plus' previous releases, the group's original compositions are the meat of the album: "Giant" and "Physical Cities" carve out huge walls of sonic space with abandon. This is rockist jazz, a postmodern fusion that relies greatly on tricky time signatures and mashups of seemingly incongruous sound. It's not likely this music will age spectacularly well, but so what? If you're looking for some engaging and conversation-inducing dinner music preceding an evening spent watching Napoleon Dynamite or any Wes Anderson flick, this is just the thing.

Recorded in England after a stretch of continuous touring, Give is a more-than-worthy successor to 2003's These Are the Vistas, the major-label debut that launched the Bad Plus as a significant musical force. The Midwestern piano trio doesn't just link the worlds of abstract jazz and big-beat rock--instead, they smash them together, fusing bombast and subtlety with wit and art in consistently surprising ways. It's most apparent in the covers. The Pixies' "Velouria" develops a heady layer of Spanish impressionism, while Ornette Coleman's "Street Woman," showcasing Reid Anderson's propulsive bass, is much closer to jazz expectations--the early Paul Bley trio, say, if jazz expectations get that high. Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" becomes a manifesto, pianist Ethan Iverson combining the elementary theme with an anarchic, trip-hammer right hand straight from the playground of free jazz. The originals cover even more ground--from the colliding ironies of Iverson's "Cheney Piñata" to the sweetness of drummer David King's "Frog and Toad." Produced, like the last CD, by Tchad Blake, Give demonstrates just how effectively pop production values and jazz spontaneity can interact. King's drumming alone is a sonic and creative highlight throughout. Along with a new aesthetic, the Bad Plus has already begun to define a new audience, and this CD should both delight and enlarge it

"Suspicious Activity?" continues the aural festivities. Produced by Tchad Blake (Peter Gabriel, Los Lobos, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Phish), it was recorded "live" with "virtually no overdubs". The band reduces the number of covers to just one (Theme from Chariots Of Fire), which I suspect is a way to get people weaned off of the tit and onto the solid food. In this case the solid food is the songwriting and all three members contribute. The album leans a little Rock & Roll on some tracks mainly due to some straight-up rock rhythms, but this is still the Bad Plus we've come to love.

Here's a major label debut that doesn't disappoint. For starters, Midwestern piano trio the Bad Plus--in the same vein as Dave Douglas or Brad Mehldau--clearly know a thing or two about how to mix pop music with forward-thinking jazz. The group covers Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," Blondie's "Heart of Glass," and Aphex Twin's "Flim" with wit, virtuosity, and respect to the originals--these interpretations never sound in the least bit cliched or overwrought. But even the new material on These Are the Vistas is loaded with infectious hooks. Ethan Iverson uses the entire range of his piano with speed and dexterity; David King's drum fills are deftly placed, at times harkening more to electronica music's lightening fast percussion flourishes than anything on the jazz scene; and bassist Reid Anderson somehow keeps up with the madness and maintains a steady beat. Amidst all the fun is a dynamic record that holds your attention. A wonderful effort.

Return to Forever

1. Return To Forever
2. Crystal Silence
3. What Game Shall We Play Today
4. Sometime Ago - La Fiesta

The soul of fusion lies not in the barrage of note clusters played through overdriven amplifiers but in the arresting beauty of Return to Forever's lucid vision of music without boundaries. The stunningly virtuosic pianist Chick Corea had already gone through an exploration of free jazz with Circle, tutelage in the Miles Davis Academy of New Electric Music and the soul-searching of "Piano Improvisations" when he arrived at his most brilliant conception. Corea and bassist Stanley Clarke fly through the proceedings, supporting Joe Farrell's flute and soprano sax playing in what may have been the performance of his life. Flora Purim's vocals and Airto Moreira's drums and percussion work discretely in service of the music's serenity.

Featuring the same band as the first Return to Forever album--vocalist Flora Purim, saxophonist-flutist Joe Farrell, bassist Stanley Clarke, and drummer Airto-- 1973's Light As a Feather was the result of a conscious effort on Chick Corea's part to communicate with a broader audience. Although Corea's electric piano and Purim's spacey-samba vocals might sound dated, the album includes a couple of Corea's most beloved compositions, "500 Miles High" and "Spain." Subsequent Return to Forever albums turned to conceptual bombast and silly fantasies. Here, Corea strikes an appealing balance between art and accessibility.

5. For Miles
6. Straight No Chaser

8. Blackbird, Bye Bye

Recorded within two weeks of Miles Davis's death, this CD is a direct emotional response to the trumpeter's passing from a long-established trio of his former sidemen: pianist Keith Jarrett, bassist Gary Peacock, and drummer Jack DeJohnette. "For Miles," a collective improvisation that lasts for over 18 minutes, is both the literal and figurative centerpiece of the CD, a performance that seems to struggle toward a profound and somber expression. Otherwise it's a varied program, as much celebration of Davis's inspiration as lament, as it moves from the title standard, closely associated with Davis, to Oliver Nelson's seldom-played "Butch and Butch." Jarrett's playing is tightly focused, whether laconic and melodic or swinging with gusto, but it's very much a trio of equals, with DeJohnette offering constantly shifting accents and cymbal color and Peacock providing an original melodic voice as well as fluid and authoritative propulsion.

horrible title aisde -- it sounds like a bad gay porno -- this is a great set recorded before any of these guys where the big stars they are today. mehldau was just getting together his trio while still in josh redman's band. at this point, i believe, parker was actually his drummer in the 1st trio, rossy came on later. mehldau and bernstein had already played together with jimmy cobb's mob and on bernstein's own sets and turner was gigging with them all. the 1st track, parker's 'belief,' is one of the better originals of recent memory, imo. they oughta get back together for another go.

In the interests of 'sharing the wealth', let me turn you on to some of the blogs some of this stuff comes from...

Yeah, some of the stuff in these threads is uploaded by the PT'ers themselves, but a lot comes from existing music blogs. Since most peeps just post a 'deep link' directly to the hosting site (rapidshare, megaupload, sendspace, etc.) I thought I'd share some of the blogs I've been raping from. If you go to these blogs, they all have links to other blogs ad infinitum (and she told two friends, and she told two friends...never mind, you guys are too young to remember that commercial!) So from one or two 'seed' blogs that someone here mentioned, I have favorited a whole bunch, and have been DLing like crazy!

Some of these are forign language, but usually the names are all in english. Some are rips from original LP's, a lot of unreleased stuff, demos, outtakes, etc. A goldmine. Some of the older links on
some of them are bunk, but many have several sources listed and at least one of them is still valid. zshare never seems to expire, for example. Some have passwords on the zip files, but usually the password is explained in the comments section of each posting, along with the DL URL.

An examination of contributions of $500 or more, using the Huffington Post’s Fundrace website, shows that employees of the top five arms makers - Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop-Grumman, Raytheon and General Dynamics — gave Democratic presidential candidates $103,900, with only $86,800 going to Republicans.

Senator Clinton took in $52,600, more than half of the total going to all Democrats, and a figure equaling 60 percent of the sum going to the entire GOP field. Her closest competitor for defense industry money is former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney (R.), who raised $32,000.

The Harlem Experiment

It started in 2001 with a simple premise: take acclaimed musicians from a shared hometown but very different musical backgrounds, put them in a funky recording studio and have them create spontaneous art. From that humble thought came the Mighty Oak known around the world as the Philadelphia Experiment and hot on its heels the underground classic Detroit Experiment. And now after 4 years of crafty deliberation, ropeadope is breaking out the lab coats once again. We headed back into the studios, setting up shop in NYC and emerged with what is fast becoming the most anticipated record of the year. Grammy-winning producer Aaron "Ace" Levinson and ropeadope founder Andy Hurwitz have assembled another genre-bending tribute to perhaps America’s greatest cultural crown jewel – Harlem USA.

Jamie Saft - keyboards
Kenny Wollesen - vibes
Trevor Dunn - bass

Electric Masada - At The Mountains of Madness

Part 1: http://www.mediafire.com/?9xltj0wwd0z
Part 2: http://www.mediafire.com/?byewpfdci0b
Part 3: http://www.mediafire.com/?5egjgo0xje2

Cyro Baptista - percussion
Joey Baron - drums
Kenny Wollesen - drums
John Zorn - alto saxophone
Trevor Dunn - bass
Ikue Mori - electronics, laptop
Jamie Saft - keyboards

The 2004 release of 50th Birthday Celebration Volume 4, the first official recording of any kind from the almost legendary Electric Masada ensemble, was revelatory. For those not privileged to have seen this group in action, that live album offered a first taste of their ferocity and lyricism. And it's that combination that makes Electric Masada special: they combine the beauty of many of John Zorn's Masada songs with a percussive, improvisational fury aided by a lineup that features two drummers and a percussionist.

The beautifully-packaged At the Mountains of Madness, the second Electric Masada release, is, if anything, even wilder. The hellaciously noisy freakouts are even noisier and more powerful this time around, and there are even two renditions of a song by Naked City, Zorn's infamous punk-jazz outfit, here appropriately dubbed "Metal Tov." Zorn in particular seems especially possessed, his sax solos blowing freer and more intense compared to those on the 50th birthday disc. And the enigmatic laptop wizard Ikue Mori plays a more prominent role, filling previously empty spaces with her obtuse electronic squiggling. While not as revelatory as the 50th birthday album, At the Mountains of Madness arguably packs a bigger punch. Not surprisingly, the shorter pieces like "Idalah-Abal" and "Hath-Arob" are storming beasts (though I actually prefer the longer, more developed, and more carefully-paced compositions); and the second disc's opener, "Tekufah," is given an absolutely searing reading that easily trumps its rendition on the 50th birthday release.

For the Masada/Zorn neophyte, suffice it to say that Electric Masada brings elements of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew in line with a particular vision of 21st century fusion: a vision dominated by aggressive improvisation and Jewish melodies. Like the best of the Masada material, the songs here alternate (sometimes almost predictably) between spacy and beautifully melodic passages and loud, heavy jams sometimes based in jazz improv and sometimes in more rock-styled formats.

Bird: The Complete Charlie Parker on Verve

This 10 CD retrospective contains everything Bird recorded on the Verve label, including live tracks with Ella Fitzgerald. With nearly 2 hours of never-before-released music, there are 175 tracks in all, a 24 page booklet with photos and liner notes by Dizzy Gillespie.

Personnel includes: Charlie Parker (alto saxophone); Ella Fitzgerald (vocals); Benny Carter, Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Clarke, Ben Webster, Miles Davis, Coleman Hawkins, Gil Evans, Thelonious Monk, Buddy Rich, Lester Young, Max Roach, Kenny Dorham, Ray Brown, Red Rodney, John Lewis, Roy Haynes.

Producer: Norman Granz.

Compilation producer: Phil Schaap.

Includes liner notes by Dizzy Gillespie and Phil Schaap.

Digitally remastered by Phil Schaap, Tom "Curley" Ruff and Dennis M. Drake.

It is difficult to overestimate the importance of this ten-disc set, a comprehensive collection of everything Parker recorded for Verve. Though not as incendiary as the Dial and Savoy boxes, the Verve set still witnesses Parker developing the model for modern jazz, devising styles and techniques that would define the genre for the rest of the century. The range of material here is impressive, and the music shows Bird venturing beyond his already wide-reaching jazz horizons to encompass Afro-Cuban influences and Classically tinged phrases. He even quotes from Stravinsky's THE RITE OF SPRING on "Repetition."

The list of session musicians reads like a veritable who's who of jazz. Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Carter, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Coleman Hawkins, Buddy Rich, Lester Young, and Max Roach all put in appearances. Here also are Parker's controversial sessions with strings. While purists cried sacrilege at the marriage, the playing is rich in tone and body-to the point of dreaminess--and, even in an orchestral context, Parker is never less than experimentally virtuosic. In short, THE COMPLETE SESSION ON VERVE is an essential contribution-along with the Dial and Savoy sessions--to a complete picture of one of jazz's greatest figures.

I love the internet. I take five minutes in the morning to set up a few uploads, spend the day snowboarding and going to a basketball game, then come home 14 hours later, and it's all done.

One day in my History of Jazz class, freshman year in college, the teacher showed a video of Mahavishnu Orchestra on the King Biscuit Flower Hour. I spent the next four or five months barely listening to any other band. The original lineup of John McLaughlin (guitar), Billy Cobham (drums), Jan Hammer (keys), Jerry Goodman (violin), and Rick Laird (bass) is one of the greatest bands to ever exist on this planet. Most of these may only be of use to the newbs mentioned in the thread title, but if you don't have them, dig:

The Inner Mounting Flame - Their first, and best album. I don't know if there exists another studio album that rocks this hard.
Birds of Fire - Only a tiny notch down from Inner Mounting Flame. I think it's blasphemy, but some folks prefer this one.
Between Nothingness and Eternity - Live album, great stuff.
The Lost Trident Sessions - I don't know the history of why this sat on shelves, or how it finally got released, but it's the studio version of the music on Between Nothingness and Eternity. It may only be the fourth-best of the stuff they released, but that's like saying The White Album is only the fourth-best Beatles album.
3/27/72 - I got this from someone on PT a while back. It's badass.

Sticking with the theme of classics that most folks probably have, but people who don't need, I think this is one of the very best live albums of all time:

Grant Green - Live at the Lighthouse

This is my favorite Coltrane album, and easily one of my five favorite pieces of music that I've ever heard:

Sun Ship

After the classics, here's a contemporary keyboardist I dig. It certainly helps that it allows me to have a crush on a musician who's both female and hot, but I was blown away the first time I heard her, and had no idea of her gender. This is my favorite album by Hiromi, but she has three others that are pretty damn good as well:

Brain - part 1
Brain - part 2

Sorry for the verbosity; it's tough to restrain when drunk.

awesome post!

can you repost the 3.27.72 Mahavishnu? PT messes up the link when there's a date in it.
