The main groove and some lyrics of Intentions Clear appear as early as the 11/13/2004 'Jimmy Stewart w/lyrics' inside of JaJunk. Recorded on Safety In Numbers with tenor saxophone legend Joshua Redman, UM waited to debut this song live until they could play it with another saxophone player, Mitch Marcus, at the Fillmore on 4/15/2006.
UM did however play a jam at a high-profile show in Chicago (3/10/2006) that contained the main riff of Intentions Clear, this was inside 'Sociable Jimmy'. The crowd lets out a roar though the album was not set to be released for another few weeks, it had already leaked through popular Internet sharing services. Fans in line the following night for UM's late-night show at Langerado also heard Brendan playing around with the opening guitar riff.
Other live versions with the saxophone include Redman twice in August of 2006 (8,25 and 8,26) and with Jeff Coffin on 12/30/2006.
The 6/8/2006 Knoxville performance of the song featured the first real exteneded outro jam which lead to a transition into Motley Crue's 'Doctor Feelgood'. Similarly, at a 'songlist' show of Fall 2006, the 9/30/2006 version contains an outro jam that fizzles into 'The Triple Wide'.
12/1/2006 contains an outro jam that lands in 'Blue Echo' after a brief and humorous 'In The Kitchen' fakeout.
